A Detroit mayoral candidate slams her opponents, and our expert says there’s a chance of an upset in the primary. Pundit Michael Griffie joins ML and Marc to handicap the race before Shawn shows up with … snacks?

STRAIGHT DOPE:

The second-best candidate in recent Detroit history to not get elected zooms in to Red Shovel HQ to opine on the state of the Detroit mayor’s race. Also: Here’s ML’s take on what happened in the last debate.

There are 9 candidates running for mayor. But only 6 have a legitimate chance. Or is it 4? Former congressional candidate Michael Griffie says there are probably only 2 candidates who will advance to the run-off election. Listen and learn who he thinks will survive the Aug. 5 primary.

The frontrunner in the mayor’s race wasn’t a big fan of ML’s recent column, which pointed out the inconvenient truth her campaign email that said she didn’t take money from billionaires or corporate PACs was not true. Get the deets here.

Pundits expect Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield to finish first in the Aug. 5 primary, when the top two vote getters advance to the general election. But Michael says there’s a chance another candidate could take the big prize. Find out who he’s talking about, and hear a discussion about what impact finishing second can have on a presumed favorite. Spoiler alert: It’s not good!

Marc asks Michael if former Detroit Police Chief James Craig has blown his chance to be mayor. Michael says Craig didn’t help himself by declaring his Republican roots, but suggests the chief could still surprise folks and finish in the top 2.

Michael says he’s noticed something about Sheffield over the past month or so: She has a very thin skin. He said her comment about the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy scandal at the Charlie LeDuff-sponsored debate exposed a potential vulnerability.
