Yacht rock gets a whole lotta love when two local musicians drop in to hype their upcoming gig before the world premiere of a new music video in Room 7609.
STRAIGHT DOPE: TRIGGER WARNING: ML compares one of the commercials on Sirius XM’s POTUS channel with an inappropriate headline he saw in The Onion during the Clinton Administration.
Marc’s intro suggests Shawn is a devil worshipper. Shawn says he isn’t … he just used to hang out with one.
ML gets the show off to a manic start, with jokes about Vivek Ramaswamy’s new album. (It’s not as bad as it sounds — ML’s jokes, not Vivek’s album.)
Who are the best feuding brother bands? Marc likes the Black Crowes, guests Brian Robillard of the Common Scolds and Max Prokop of The Kings English and Shasta Fox put in a good word for Oasis. Shawn offers some love to Van Halen. And ML casts his lot with The Kinks. Tell us about your favorite with an email to [email protected]
Max loves vinyl while ML complains that he doesn’t like to get up every 22 minutes to flip the record. But almost everyone in the gang finds something to love about the near-defunct format that is making a comeback.
As a boy, ML was moved to tears by the cover of Queen’s “News of the World.” But even though he spent a lot of time contemplating the album art, he got a whole bunch wrong about the boys in the band. Listen, learn and laugh!
It’s OK; you can admit you love Yacht Rock. Even Shawn won’t make fun of you! Still, ML is reluctant to embrace the genre that makes him think about frat boys and bucket hats.
The gang raves about OJ Simpson documentaries and tells ML he doesn’t know what he’s missing. He says he doesn’t have time for such foolishness and is instead spending all of his viewing time watching James Marsden star vehicles.
This is not a misprint: Christopher Cross, maybe the softest songwriter of the 70s and 80s, once filled in for guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore when he couldn’t make a gig with Deep Purple. Hear all about it in the new episode.
